It is intriguing that Denmark burns more candles per head than anywhere else in Europe. The semi-continuous burning of candles is an absolute essential for the Danes, especially in the autumn and winter months. This lighting of candles is not just in the home but in their offices, classrooms and coffee shops. People are raised this way and it contributes to a nationwide atmosphere of cosiness and relaxation. Scented candles are not popular in Denmark, they see them as artificial and always tend to choose traditional scentless lights. The colours favoured for candles also tend to be refined muted tones and whites, too much colour is avoided. Try adding more candlelight to your home this January and enjoy the simple Danish pleasures of the naked flame!
