Broste Copenhagen was established in 1955 when Ulf Broste - the son of a successful Copenhagen salt merchant had a little idea, which turned out to have huge potential.
At that time, Danish furniture design was led by iconic characters like Børge Mogensen, Finn Juhl and Arne Jacobsen. Together with a handful of other artists and craftsmen, they experienced a surge of media attention yet were unable to manufacture and distribute their goods in quantities that would make it a lucrative business. Therefore Ulf Broste assembled a group of the greatest talents and systemised both manufacturing and export, soon they were joined by more designers and small furniture manufacturers.
In the years that followed Broste’s business flourished. The headquarters and the first three Broste stores included rugs, artwork and selected furniture now located at Broste Gaard in the beautiful surroundings of the Christianshavn canal. Soon after, another five Broste stores opened at exclusive addresses elsewhere in the city. Ulf Broste’s passion for furniture and design had become a business that played an influential role in the creative circles of that day and helped create an international market for Danish craftsmen with their unique form and style. Broste Copenhagen continued under the leadership of Ulf’s son Peter Broste, first as managing director and later as a member of the board, he eventually retired after more than 40 years.
Since the 1950’s Broste Copenhagen has become an international brand, today owned by managing director Kim Larsen and the Norwegian Hillestad family. Their passion for Danish design and love for the Nordic touch lives on in every single product - just as it did back then. Now Broste Copenhagen is a contemporary Danish interior design company with an international reach. Over the past 60 years they have created products that have both defined and extended beyond the momentary trends. They have furnished homes and provided inspiration for letting new colours, shapes and material move in - and have helped to open the world’s eyes to how simple Nordic design can be translated into the home setting.
Broste Copenhagen are a business founded in the ingenuity, creative urges and sense of decent business expertise from which the company was born. At Broste they fiercely safeguard their reliability, that is the key to their good business relations and loyal customer base. Broste take pride in fulfilling their promises and honouring their agreements, being a business where integrity, reliability, openness and respectful relationships are just as important as the quality of their furniture.
At Broste Copenhagen they want to be an active part of the society in which they live and act - as individuals, as citizens and as a renowned Danish business. That’s why they have adopted a robust CSR policy.
